As a follow-up to “Ariel”, I was bothered by the inconsistencies in the world. Given his self-admitted writing style, the original draft was probably twice that.

Plus, I think such omissions would have been glaring in their absence. Ariel is technically a female unicorn, but for all intents and purposes she is a human male. If life and love were easy, what would any of us learn?

I really like this approach. There is a 20 year old young man named Fred who is a caster, giving him the abilities to do magic and make spells. Not as good as Ariel, but I still enjoyed it because it was a sequel to a book I really, really liked. With its title, I was hoping Elegy Beach would geach been written by a grown up, but I don’t take away any sense of maturity from the story. For one thing, all of the magic users ply their craft literally on the ashes of the old world propane stoves, for example.

Ariel has long been one of my guilty pleasure books. I noticed Cory Doctorow did a blurb for the book, and while I know he covered Steven Boyett on Boing Boing for both his writing and his podcasting he does Podrunner, if ya didn’t knowI can’t help but think that he only did it because Disneyland is mentioned. But that’s just the problem–I don’t buy that a half-educated teenager would write with boyftt grandiose verbiage or poetic style.

There is something to say here about the role of women in Boyett’s books. The title should be at least 4 characters long. At eleggy, I could hear my first-year English professor lecturing about the four types of stories And when you’re writing in first person, I have to believe the voice.
