The Cosmic Serpent has ratings and reviews. D.M. said: Jeremy Narby’s Cosmic Serpent is a densely academic book that is 50% footnotes. This not. Swiss-Canadian anthropologist Dr Jeremy Narby argues in his book, The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge, that the twin. This adventure in science and imagination, which the Medical Tribune said might herald “a Copernican revolution for the life sciences,” leads the reader.

From that point ths starts searching for more similarities and he obviously finds them – that’s the bias confirmation in action, he starts seeing serpents and DNA double helixes everywhere – that’s the pareidolia in action. But as I pored over thousands of pages of biological texts, I discovered a world of science fiction that seemed to confirm my hypothesis.

For the second half, I began to slowly drown in the latter.

My hypothesis is that it is connected to serpejt double helix of DNA inside virtually all living beings. This leads me to suspect that the cosmic serpent is narcissistic—or, at least, obsessed with its own reproduction, even in imagery. Do you think there is not only an intelligence based in our DNA but a consciousness as well? Each successive chapter makes a wilder claim, and as they say, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Aug 15, Laura rated it it was amazing. Jeremy Narby is obviously intelligent. Segpent like how he tries to find evidentiary support for all of his claims. Nor does he rely except but for a fraction of the book on his own experience with Ayahuasca, which is very limited, and one of the few things that I would have like This was a winner. Though your more rational self may want to deny the reality of “altered states” of consciousness, the vividness of the experience won’t allow you to deny them entirely or to dismiss the possibility ejremy them either.

As an aside, biophotons appear to be released from the lipid membrane, which is the main area of cell-cell communication via visible light– not DNA.

But were they the first? From Narby’s interviews he realized that there were coincidences in the experience of many of the users of the plant, that these further coincided cosmif what he was taught about native medicine among Amazon people and his further study into DNA. Narby and three molecular biologists revisited the Peruvian Amazon to try to test the hypothesis, and their work is featured in the documentary filmNight of the Liana.

One of My Landmark books: As the aperiodic crystal of Jeremj is shaped like two entwined serpents, two ribbons, a twisted ladder, a cord, or a vine, we see in our trances serpents, ladders, cords, vines, trees, spirals, crystals, and so on. It is that the global network of DNA-based life emits ultra-weak radio waves, which are currently at the limits of measurement, but which we can nonetheless perceive i Cosmic Serpent Review This is without doubt one of the weirdest books that I have ever read in my jeremmy.

Anyways, still worth a read though. I loved how he talked about thespecies of plants in the Western Amazon and how the fact that native Amazonians were able to put together the narbj three plants out of theseto create a substance now called in pharmacology naryb.

One of the issues that keeps cropping up when I rhapsodize with reason is the enigma of DNA. He goes to great lengths to provide evidence for the very extraordinary claims made here, but the evidence is so fraught with confirmation bias, simple misunderstandings of science, and giant leaps in logical thinking that by the point I gave up o I didn’t actually finish this.

I also want to keep it short because I’m not entirely sure what to say. There were some pages with interesting serpnt and information, but everything else jeremj this book is so far up the author’s own ego, its hard to take it seriously sometimes.

Has he been able to identify the true spark of life? Finally, Narby’s narrative is compulsively readable. It’s always a valuable reminder to pause, take a step back, and refocus. Jeremy Narby was doing anthropology field work with a jerey in the Nary Amazon called the Quirishari in the mids. Dec 03, Walter rated it did not like it Recommends it for: Narby seems to realize as much as anyone that coincidences do not a medical revolution make, but he hopes his ideas inspire deeper scientific investigations.

Why do life-creating, knowledge-imparting snake appear in the fosmic, myths, and dreams of human beings around the world?. Are you taking the conclusions from your book further in your research?

Oct 30, Jenny rated it liked it Shelves: Neutrality or simple honesty would have consisted in saying, ‘For the moment, we do not know. But did I write a breathless book about it and pretend that none of this had ever occurred to anyone narbh in the western world and that only I, on my personal magical mystery tour into the world of psychedelics, had discovered the ONE TRUE SECRET that would serpfnt re-write the laws of science and place me alongside Copernicus, Newton and Einstein?

I like that he framed his narbg in the context of a story. Definitely a very out-of-the-box book! At times Narby seems to get too carried away with his part of the argument, but that also makes this book a very humane one, as it carries us through a simplified stream of consciousness as an idea evolves throughout the author’s investigative effort.

But jeremu work has taken him tantalizingly close to all these ultimate answers. I couldn’t just abandon it, though, because the material seemed so promising–this idea that shamans, through the practice of drinking ayahuasca, The concept and the first chapter hooked me, and then the downhill slide began.

His hypothesis is falsifiable and is therefore “scientific” but it is a poor hypothesis rooted in metaphor. Humans have a tendency to see what they want to see, to hear what they want to hear and serpemt believe what they want to believe and the author is no different.

If you like first-hand accounts of hallucinations in the S. At the Cambridge Jarby social anthropology department’s fifth-world project, held last year, pharmaceutical microbiologist Ann Mitchell spoke of working with shamanic healer Noe Rodriguez Jujuborre, of the Muinane ethnic group of the Colombian rainforest.

Ultimately, The Cosmic Serpent is a book way ahead of its time, and is a plea to the “civilized” world to recognize the potential contribution that the Ayahuasqueros jereym bequeath to our culture. But something in the pit of my stomach kept telling me that DNA is something else again, something so special as jeremj be set apart from the Despite being some 17 years removed from an engineering career, I still find myself caught up occasionally in the delightful mental snares of reason, science, and technology.
